Our trainee solicitors are valued as key team members from the day they join Whitehead Monckton, and we are committed to providing the very highest quality in-house training and mentoring for each individual. We are looking to recruit the leaders of the future and several of our Directors and Associate Directors trained with the firm.

We welcome applications from candidates with excellent qualifications, and high academic achievements, with a 2:1 degree preferred, in any subject.   But equally important are enthusiasm and initiative combined with excellent inter-personal and team working skills. We have a good track record of trainees who may have previously had other careers and are bringing different life skills and experience to their role, as well as the typical law graduate route to a career as a solicitor.

Unfortunately, at present we are not able to offer sponsorship for any SQE costs.

During your training you will normally have placements in different areas of the company, these are commonly known as “seats”. These include:

Commercial property
Corporate & Commercial
Dispute resolution
Employment law
Family
Residential property
Tax & estate planning

What is the application and assessment process?

Following receipt of your application form and CV, we will shortlist candidates to move to the next stage which is the preparation and submission of a video presentation, on a range of different topics. These will be viewed by our Managing Director Chris Longden, Training Principal Katie Broadfield and HR Officer Joanne Forbes.  We will then shortlist again and invite successful candidates to come into the Maidstone office for a face-to-face interview with the opportunity to meet some current trainees and get a feel for your potential future working environment.

The assessment process is very much a two-way process, you will be able to find out more about our company, meet key people and understand our culture, aims and long-term goals so you can hopefully envisage your future career with us.

Frequently Asked Questions

I obtained a 2:2 degree can I still apply to be a trainee?

A 2:1 degree or higher is not an absolute requirement but it is preferred.  But we can consider your application, with any other significant achievements, or mitigating factors.  Pease feel free to still apply if you feel you can demonstrate your suitability for the role.

How long does the training last?

Training contracts usually last two years if you are a traditional LPC graduate, if you are undertaking the SQE then we offer 2 years qualifying work experience.

Which office will I be based at?

With three offices in Maidstone, Canterbury and Tenterden, trainees are expected to be flexible with their locations throughout the duration of their contracts, as you may have different seats in different offices, depending on the needs of the departments.

Trainees do not normally spend any time at our Canary Wharf office, but this may be occasionally necessary.

How will I be assessed during my training?

Typically, each seat will be for the duration of 6 months. You will have a mid seat review to check your progress and ensure you have the opportunity to develop your role and address any issues there may be, and at the end of your seat a final appraisal with your assigned supervisor.

How much support do I get?

  • You will have a supervisor in each department you work in who will oversee your day-to-day work.
  • You will have the support of your colleagues within the department, both support and qualified staff
  • Regular meetings with your Training Principal and Human Resources
  • Mid seat and end of seat appraisals
  • Regular contact with fellow Trainees across the firm
  • A mentor is also assigned for each new trainee
