Sustainability, Community and Social Impact

Environmental, Social Value and Governance (ESG)

At Whitehead Monckton we are committed to conducting our business in a responsible and sustainable manner to contribute positively to the Kent region and beyond. Our ESG policy sets out our approach to minimising our environmental impact, promoting social responsibility, and maintaining high governance standards.

Two sub-committees make up the ESG committee – the Environmental and Governance Committee and the Social and Community Committee.

Environmental and Sustainability Initiatives

Whitehead Monckton is proud to play our part in building a sustainable future by actively reducing carbon emissions across our operations. With support from Martin White at Green Business Hub, our Environmental and Governance Committee conducted a full carbon audit to assess Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions – from direct energy use and purchased power to supply chain impact.

We’re committed to halving these emissions by 2030 in line with the Science Based Target Initiative and UK net zero goals. Our next carbon audit is scheduled for January 2025.

Why It Matters

Climate change affects everyone, everywhere. As a firm rooted in the Kent community, we recognise our role in shaping a healthier, more responsible future – locally and globally. Reducing emissions helps:

  • Protect the planet and biodiversity
  • Improve public health and air quality
  • Drive economic efficiency and innovation
  • Lead by example within our profession and beyond

What We’re Doing

We’ve identified a number of ways to help us meet our targets:

  • Governance: operating transparently, ethically, and in line with professional standards
  • Energy efficiency: Adopting low-energy practices and exploring renewables.
  • Sustainable travel: supporting cycling and low-emission commuting options.
  • Recycling and waste: reducing paper use, increasing recycling and transforming sanitary waste into energy.
  • Greener supply chains: prioritising eco-conscious suppliers and purchases.
  • Community engagement: partnering with schools and supporting youth through careers fairs and work experience.

Sustainability isn’t a box-ticking exercise – it’s an ongoing responsibility. We’re continuously reviewing, refining and expanding our efforts to reduce impact, share knowledge, and inspire change.

Community and Social Value Impact

We’ve served the communities of Kent for over 230 years, and we take pride in our historic roots, continually seeking ways of giving something back to those communities that have supported us, whether by raising funds for a local charity, through volunteering and pro-bono work or through our Charitable Foundation.

We are committed to engagement with our employees to provide a challenging, dynamic, inclusive and diverse work environment that supports their professional development, as well as promoting a good work-life balance that prioritises their overall health and wellness.

Making a Meaningful Difference - One Charity at a Time

Each year, our staff vote to select a Charity of the Year, setting the focus for generating creative ideas to raise both funds and visibility for the charity’s cause. Throughout the year, we organise a variety of events that bring colleagues and contacts together, spark community spirit, and make giving back fun and rewarding for everyone involved.

Since 2012, our incredible team have raised almost £100,000 for our chosen charities by participating in all sorts of things from physical challenges and sky dives to quiz nights, golf days, race nights to dress down days and arts and crafts.

Previous charities of the year include, Porchlight, Slide Away, Echo, The Stroke Association, Mid-Kent MIND, South East Dog Rescue and Chalkdown Riding for the Disabled Association.  Our Charity of the Year until 1 April 2026 is Alzheimer’s Research UK.

If you would like to apply to be our next Charity of the Year, a form will be available for completion towards the end of the year.  Please note our charity year is 1 April – 31 March as opposed to the calendar year.

Supporting Local Causes Through the Whitehead Monckton Charitable Foundation

Founded in 2012, the Whitehead Monckton Charitable Foundation is dedicated to supporting local charities throughout Kent and the surrounding areas. Our Trustees meet regularly to consider applications for grants – typically ranging from £1,000 to £5,000 – which are often used to fund one-off projects that make a tangible difference in the community.

The Foundation thrives thanks to the heartfelt generosity of our clients, who contribute during their lifetimes or leave legacies in their Wills. Their support helps us extend our impact and strengthen the region we proudly serve.

To find out how to donate or submit a grant application, please visit the WMCF website.
